VIDEO: Calcium for Weight Loss
When combined with a low-calorie diet, this mineral can help boost weight loss
This is Julian Whitaker, M.D., with a Whitaker Wellness Tip.
Several studies link a high calcium intake with a reduced risk of obesity, but does getting extra calcium help with weight loss?
To answer this question, researchers from the University of Tennessee divided overweight people into three groups and placed them on low calorie diets containing varying amounts of calcium. After six months, the study volunteers with the highest calcium intake, 1,200 mg per day lost the most weight, an average of 24 pounds, compared to a 15-pound weight loss for those getting 400 to 500 mg.
Now, I'm not suggesting that calcium is the answer, but considering that two-thirds of Americans are overweight and nearly three-quarters have inadequate calcium intake, 400 to 500 mg a day, there may be something to it. For weight control and overall health, increase your consumption of dietary calcium, and make sure your daily multivitamin contains at least 1,000 mg of this important mineral.
