Mini-fast: An Excellent Therapy for Type 2 Diabetes
Challenge Tip of the Week
If you want to lose weight, you obviously need to cut out sugary foods and drinks. But replacing them with diet sodas and other foods containing artificial, no-calorie sweeteners like Nutrasweet and Splenda isn’t the answer. These chemicals have checkered safety records and can wreak havoc on your body. Use natural sugar substitutes instead. My favorites are stevia and xylitol, which are sold in health food stores nationwide.
Recipe of the Week
Here's an example of how you can use the natural sugar substitute stevia to sweeten lemonade. This recipe is from my Reversing Diabetes Cookbook:
Sugar-Free Lemonade
Serves 4
- 1/2 cup lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon stevia powder or to taste*
- 4 cups water
Directions:
Place lemon juice and stevia in a large pitcher and stir to dissolve.
Add water and stir. Refrigerate. Serve chilled or over ice.
*Go easy on stevia. Add just a few drops of liquid or shakes of powdered stevia, taste, and add more, if needed. Some people find that stevia, especially if you overdo it, has an unpleasant aftertaste.
