Getting plenty of sleep, exercising moderately, eating a healthy diet, avoiding excess stress, and taking a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement that contains adequate amounts of antioxidants and zinc are my top recommendations for warding off a cold.

Unfortunately, sometimes the most diligent of efforts fail and you succumb to a cold anyway. While there are many natural remedies that you could reach for, you should consider the symptoms you’re experiencing when making your selection.

If respiratory congestion and cough are among your symptoms, I suggest you give wild cherry (Prunus serotina) bark a try. A traditional Native American remedy for cough and colds, wild cherry was widely used in over-the-counter cough syrups until the 1940s. Nowadays, you can find standardized extracts in natural products designed to treat respiratory congestion and cough. They’re available online and in your local health food store.
