You already know that vitamins C and E are important nutrients and protective antioxidants. But what many people don’t realize is that together they give you powerful protection against many diseases.

  • Ward off bone loss. One of the best ways to strengthen bones is to incorporate resistance training into your routine. Plus, a new study suggests upping your daily intake of vitamins E and C may provide comparable bone benefits.

  • Protect your arteries by preventing the destructive oxidation of LDL cholesterol and helping to block its buildup. To enjoy the benefits of these vitamins, I recommend taking 400-800 IU of vitamin E daily and 1,000 to 5,000 mg of vitamin C daily in divided doses to protect your heart.

  • Help to prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is one of the leading causes of blindness. AMD causes a loss of central vision and the inability to see fine details, and it’s primarily triggered by a lifetime of free-radical damage. For optimal benefits of the vitamins, studies have found that taking vitamin C (1,000-1,500 mg) and vitamin E (300-400 IU) helps to lower the risk of AMD.

  • Reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. A study involving nearly 5,000 participants looked at the combined effects of vitamin E and other antioxidants. The researchers found that those participants taking 1,000 IU of vitamin E and 500–1,000 mg of vitamin C had a 64 to 78 percent lower risk of Alzheimer’s than the placebo group.

  • Help to protect you against cancer. Numerous studies have shown that high-dose vitamin C is associated with a decreased risk of cancer, and that intravenously administered vitamin C can help to fight cancer. In addition, several large epidemiological studies showed that high blood levels of vitamin E also help protect against cancer.
